The Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30321) is your official entry point into the fitness industry. It qualifies you to work as either a Gym Instructor or Group Exercise Instructor—two essential roles in most fitness facilities. Whether you’re looking to support members on the gym floor or lead group classes, Cert III gives you the skills to get started.
As a Gym Instructor, your role is all about supporting members in a gym setting. With this qualification, you can:
Conduct fitness assessments and pre-screenings
Demonstrate safe use of gym equipment
Deliver pre-designed exercise programs (within your scope)
Supervise clients while they train
Provide motivation and basic exercise guidance
You’ll typically find Gym Instructors working in commercial gyms, fitness centres, and leisure facilities. While you’re not qualified to write ongoing personalised programs (that’s Cert IV), you are an important part of a member’s fitness journey.
Love the energy of a group workout? As a Group Exercise Instructor, you can:
Plan and lead group fitness sessions (freestyle, circuits, bootcamps, etc.)
Create a fun and safe environment for participants
Deliver classes to a wide range of fitness levels
This role is perfect for those who enjoy teaching in a group setting—whether it’s in a gym studio, outdoors, or at a community centre.
If your goal is to run specific formats; like Reformer Pilates, Yoga, Spin, Aqua Aerobics, Les Mills, or Zumba—you’ll need additional training or a separate certification for that style.
A certified Reformer Pilates course
A Cycle/Spin Instructor certificate
An Aqua Exercise Instructor skill set
A license for branded programs (e.g. Les Mills or Zumba)
Your Certificate III gives you a solid base, but teaching specialised classes safely and effectively requires extra qualifications specific to the format.
It’s important to know the limitations too! With a Cert III, you cannot:
Work as a 1:1 personal trainer
Design and deliver individualised training plans
Train clients unsupervised in non-standard environments
If you want to be a Personal Trainer and write programs tailored to individual clients, you’ll need to complete your Certificate IV in Fitness.
Gyms and health clubs
Council or community fitness centres
Outdoor group training sessions
Recreation and leisure centres
You may also find opportunities in school sport programs or supporting roles in women's wellness programs—especially if you continue developing your skills.
Certificate III in Fitness opens doors to two exciting pathways: Gym Instructor and Group Exercise Instructor. You’ll be equipped to guide, motivate, and support clients in structured environments. If you want to go further—whether it’s PT, Pilates, or something more niche—there are plenty of options waiting for you.
