Understanding the Role of a Group Fitness Instructor

Being a group fitness instructor is much more than leading workouts. We play a key role in shaping the health and wellness of our participants. Our primary job is to guide them through various exercises, making sure everyone is performing movements safely and effectively. But beyond just physical instruction, we also serve as motivators, cheerleaders and sometimes even a bit of a life coach. Our classes are a space where people come not only to sweat but also to boost their mood and self-esteem, making what we do incredibly impactful.

Our role requires us to be adaptable and responsive. Every class may include participants at different fitness levels, and part of our job is to modify exercises to accommodate everyone's needs. This ability to tailor workouts not only helps in managing a diverse group effectively but also ensures that each participant finds the session beneficial and challenging without being overwhelming. The energy we bring to each session can turn exercise from a chore into a much-anticipated event, helping participants stick to their fitness goals.

Group Exercise Instructor vs Group Exercise Leader

We’ll dive into this a little more later in the blog, but for now just understand there is a difference between a “Group Exercise Instructor” and a “Group Exercise Leader”.

A group exercise instructor has completed a Certificate III in Fitness and can design and deliver their own freestyle classes such as Bootcamp, HIIT and Circuit.

A group exercise leader has completed a Group Exercise Leader (GEL) Skill Set and can NOT design group exercise classes. Which means they are limited to delivering pre designed group exercise classes such as Zumba, Les Mills etc.

What Qualifications Do I Need to Be a Group Fitness Instructor

There are currently two qualifications you can take to become a group fitness Instructor

  1. Certificate III in Fitness - This qualification allows you to register with AUSactive as a group exercise instructor. You can teach group fitness classes such as Bootcamp, Circuit, HIIT etc.

  2. Group Exercise Leader (GEL) Skillset - The Group Exercise Leader (GEL) Skillset is not a complete qualification but a specialized skillset that allows you to register with AUSactive as a Group Exercise Leader. With this registration, you are permitted to teach pre-designed classes. You would NOT be qualified to teach classes such as Bootcamp, Circuit, or HIIT. You WOULD be able to teach classes such as Zumba, Body Pump, RPM, etc., provided that you have completed the specific certifications required for these programs.

There are other qualifications available that may allow you to teach “group fitness classes” without necessarily having a Certificate III in Fitness or a Group Exercise Leader (GEL) skillset. For example

  1. Certificate IV in Fitness - This qualification allows you to register with AUSactive as a Personal Trainer. A Personal Trainers role may include “Deliver exercise programs designed for participation by a group of clients with a mix of ages/fitness levels”. Which means you won’t be ‘registered as a group exercise instructor’ but your role as a Personal Trainer allows you to run group fitness classes.

  1. Bachelor or Exercise Science (or equivalent) - Similar to the Certificate IV in Fitness, a Bachelor of Exercise Science (or equivalent) allows you to register with AUSactive as a Personal Trainer. You may also be able to register with ESSA as an Exercise Scientist and your scope of practise would include teaching group classes.

Essential Skills for Effective Group Fitness Instruction

As group fitness instructors, we must hone certain skills that ensure our classes are not only enjoyable but also effective in achieving fitness goals. Exceptional communication is the cornerstone of these skills, enabling us to instruct clearly and motivate passionately. We must articulate workout steps and safety protocols clearly to prevent injuries and ensure that every participant understands the exercise regardless of their fitness level.

Beyond communication, an instructor's ability to create an inclusive and motivating environment is fundamental. This involves empathy and interpersonal skills that help in understanding and responding appropriately to the needs of different individuals. We also need to exhibit high energy and enthusiasm as it's contagious and can significantly affect the class's motivation and energy levels. Adaptability is another critical skill, particularly when dealing with mixed-ability groups. Being able to modify exercises and routines in real-time to suit different participants ensures everyone is challenged without feeling left out or overwhelmed.

Steps to Launching Your Career as a Group Fitness Instructor in Australia

Embarking on your career as a group fitness instructor in Australia involves several structured steps. First, it's vital to gain the necessary qualifications. Depending on the class types you aspire to teach, you may need different levels of certification. If you JUST want to teach choreographed classes such as Les Mills, Zumbba etc, acquiring a Group Exercise Leader (GEL) certificate is potentially all you need. For freestyle classes (such as Bootcamp, HIIT, Circuit etc), you will typically require at least a Certificate III or IV in Fitness. Specialisations such as yoga, pilates, or classes for new mums require additional specific training and credentials.

After obtaining the needed certifications, gaining practical experience is crucial. Starting with internships or assistant roles under seasoned instructors can provide invaluable insights and hands-on experience. During this phase, focus on building a robust network within the fitness community, contributing not only to potential job opportunities but also to your professional growth. Keep your knowledge current by engaging in continuous education and training, which will keep you updated on the latest fitness trends and techniques.
