Regaining Strength and Confidence with Dragons Abreast: A Conversation with Pearl Lee

Regaining Strength and Confidence with Dragons Abreast: A Conversation with Pearl Lee

December 25, 20244 min read

In the latest Women's Fitness Education podcast episode, I had the privilege of chatting with Pearl Lee, a truly inspiring woman whose journey is a testament to resilience and the power of community. Pearl is a breast cancer survivor, a passionate advocate for women's health, and a devoted member of Dragons Abreast. This organisation beautifully combines fitness, camaraderie, and healing through the sport of dragon boating.

Here's a recap of our conversation, filled with insights about life after breast cancer, the role of recovery exercise, and how dragon boating can be a transformative experience for anyone.

From Diagnosis to Determination

Pearl's story began in 2015 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was a busy mum of two young boys at the time, balancing family life and a demanding career in the not-for-profit sector. Like many women, she had no history of breast cancer and led a healthy lifestyle, making the diagnosis an unexpected and jarring twist.

Despite the shock, Pearl embraced her treatment journey with grit. She underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Yet, as Pearl shared, the treatments left her feeling physically depleted. "I went in well and came out unwell," she said, reflecting on the physical toll it took. It was during her recovery that Pearl's connection to fitness—and dragon boating—truly began.

Finding Strength in Movement

One of the turning points in Pearl's recovery was understanding the importance of physical activity in regaining function and confidence. She sought help from experts like Dr. Kelly Tui, a leading exercise physiologist, to guide her through tailored exercises that helped restore her mobility and strength. Simple yet targeted movements, like rolling an exercise ball against a wall, became stepping stones toward recovery.

Pearl's journey underscored a powerful message: "It's use it or lose it." Regular movement, guided by professionals, helped her reclaim her body and abilities. This philosophy of resilience and action is at the heart of her involvement with Dragons Abreast.

Dragon Boating: More Than a Sport

Dragon boating is a team-based water sport that involves paddling a long, heavy boat adorned with a dragon's head and tail. For survivors like Pearl, it offers more than just physical benefits—it provides a sense of community, purpose, and joy. Pearl explained, "You move together in sync, and it's like the boat is gliding. It's about teamwork and being present in the moment."

Dragons Abreast is a national organisation with 29 clubs across Australia. It supports breast cancer survivors by creating a space where they can regain their strength, connect with others, and thrive. Whether participants are looking for a supportive environment or a competitive outlet, the organisation caters to all levels of fitness and ambition.

Breaking Myths About Breast Cancer and Exercise

During our chat, we delved into a lingering misconception: the idea that vigorous exercise, particularly upper-body activities, could exacerbate conditions like lymphedema or even spread cancer. Pearl and her peers are living proof that movement is not only safe but essential. Research supports that activities like dragon boating can actually help manage lymphedema by promoting circulation and reducing swelling.

Why Dragon Boating Stands Out

Dragon boating checks all the boxes for physical and mental well-being. It combines cardiovascular fitness, strength training, and mindfulness. Pearl described how the rhythmic paddling fosters a meditative state, helping participants push out the mental clutter of daily life. "You're just counting strokes—one, two, three—and that focus is powerful," she said.

Beyond the physical benefits, dragon boating is about connection. The camaraderie and shared goals create a unique bond among participants, empowering them to move from surviving to thriving.
