From Nursing to Personal Training: Kelly’s Journey to a Career in Fitness

March 13, 20254 min read

Transitioning into a new career can feel daunting, but for Kelly, the shift from nursing to the fitness industry was a natural progression. Having battled with weight fluctuations and tried countless fitness fads, she discovered the power of consistency, discipline, and sustainable habits. Now, as a qualified personal trainer, Kelly is on a mission to help other women—especially mothers—feel strong, confident, and empowered through fitness.

In this interview, Kelly shares her journey, the lessons she learned during her studies, and the challenges she overcame to build a career in the fitness industry. If you’re considering studying Certificate III and IV in Fitness, her story might be just the inspiration you need.

Can you share a bit about your story? What led you to study Certificate III and IV in Fitness?

I had always struggled with my weight from a young age. I was Yo yo dieting and trying all the fitness fads. They only worked for short-time , then I quickly gained all the weight I had lost. I understood later on that being consistent & disciplined, you can start seeing results that are more sustainable. It is very rewarding! You build these healthy habits, on the inside and outside. Its not easy but with good support, anyone can do it. I found women (especially mothers) struggle the most with self-worth. If I could do it, so can other women! I hope by being a PT I can help and inspire them to feel good about themselves.

What was the most valuable thing you learned during your studies, and how has/will it helped you in your career?

Great connections I've made with other students and fitness professionals. This has helped me launch my career in the right direction.

How did it feel when you landed your first role in the fitness industry?

I run a small group fitness class for women from home. Clients are slowly trickling in. We always have fears of the unknown, but I feel positive about this! I have now also been offered to run HIIT classes at one of my local gyms!

What’s the most rewarding part of working in the fitness industry and helping other women achieve their goals?

When the clients say that they feel better after exercising and when they start seeing the results of their hard work!

What challenges did you face during your studies or early in your career, and how did you overcome them?

to be consistent with my study time. Not putting too much pressure on myself and set a goal to finish my study before the end of the year, which I did!  I finished bothe Certificate 3 and 4 in 8 months!

What advice would you give to women who are thinking about studying Certificate III or IV in Fitness but are unsure if it’s the right path for them?

I'd say just start. Most of the time we overthink things. We wont know how things will pan out until we actually do it.

How has working in the fitness industry changed your life, both personally and professionally?

I loved my career as a nurse. We help people when they are sick and nurse them. But actually helping people to get healthy/stay healthy, is a different experience. Helping people to achieve their goals and sustain it long term.

If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self before starting this journey, what would it be?

You don't have to figure out everything when you are younger. Life will sort out itself at the right time.

Kelly’s story is a testament to the impact that fitness can have—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. From her early struggles with weight to now inspiring other women to prioritize their health, she has turned her passion into a meaningful career. Her advice? Just start. You don’t have to have everything figured out; the journey unfolds as you take each step.

If you’re thinking about a career in fitness, Kelly’s experience shows that with determination, support, and the right education, you can build a fulfilling profession helping others achieve their goals.

Could this be the path for you?
