It’s Never Too Late: How Samantha Hagger Changed Careers at 40

October 13, 20254 min read

At 40, Samantha Hagger could have stayed comfortable in her successful sales career. Instead, she chose to say yes to her lifelong passion for health and fitness—and in doing so, transformed not only her own life but the lives of countless others.

Today, Sam is a personal trainer at AquaLink, founder of Whole Body Conditioning, and a finalist for the 2025 AusActive Personal Trainer of the Year Awards. With qualifications spanning TRX, Pilates, boxing, kettlebell, aqua, and postnatal pelvic floor training, she’s built her career on connection, care, and a whole-body approach to wellbeing.

From Sales to School Oval Sessions

Sam’s journey into fitness began with a bold career change at 40. As she studied her Cert III and IV in Fitness, a casual conversation at her children’s school quickly grew into something bigger.

Two school mums asked if she could help them get fit. Sam said “yes,” grabbed some resistance bands and dumbbells, and started training them at the school oval after drop-off. Word spread, and soon 10, then 20 parents were showing up—rain, hail, or shine.

What started as an informal arrangement evolved into a thriving business, complete with hired facilities and multiple group classes. Sam learned an invaluable lesson early: success often starts with simply saying yes and figuring it out along the way.

Growing Through Challenges

Like many trainers, COVID-19 changed the trajectory of Sam’s career. She moved her business online and balanced outdoor PT with community service, including Meals on Wheels. At the same time, she began working at AquaLink, where her personal training career flourished.

Today, Sam runs over 80 PT sessions per month, teaches group fitness classes, and supports members on the gym floor. Her services range from HIIT and aqua to older adult programs, with a client base spanning teenagers to people in their 70s.

A Whole-Body Approach

Sam’s philosophy is clear: training is about so much more than physical change.

She recalls one client who was terrified of stepping into a gym. Sam met her at the front door, walked her through the space, and helped her build confidence step by step. Six months later, that same client trains independently and confidently uses gym equipment on her own.

Whether it’s creating netball-inspired sessions for a former player in her 60s, or delivering aqua workouts to older adults who thrive on variety, Sam tailors every program to the person behind the goals.

“It’s not just physical—it’s mental, emotional, even spiritual. That’s why I call my business Whole Body Conditioning.”

Advice for Aspiring Trainers

Sam’s story resonates with women considering a career change into fitness—especially those who feel it might be “too late.” Her message is simple:

“It’s never too late to start. Saying yes to this career was the best thing I ever did.”

She encourages new trainers to:

  • Say yes to opportunities, even if they feel small. One 30-minute session can lead to many more.

  • Seek mentorship early. Having guidance in your first year makes the learning curve less daunting.

  • Keep learning. Upskilling keeps you engaged, inspired, and better equipped to serve diverse clients.

The Reward of Empowering Others

For Sam, the most rewarding part of being a trainer is watching her clients change—not just physically, but in confidence and mindset. Whether it’s guiding someone from fear to empowerment, or simply being a trusted listener during tough times, Sam believes in meeting people where they are.

“I love that I get to do what I love every day. The real reward is the text messages from clients saying, ‘That was the best session, I can’t wait for the next one.’ That’s what it’s all about.”

Samantha Hagger’s story is proof that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself, follow your passion, and create an impact. From school ovals in the rain to being recognised on the national stage, her career has been built on courage, care, and an unwavering commitment to her clients.

Her journey is a reminder to all women considering fitness: sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply say yes.
